Why?

The European Union establishes, through the Critical Raw Materials Act, a regulatory framework that emphasizes the importance of ensuring a stable and resilient supply of critical raw materials for Europe’s energy and digital transition, aligning with the goals of sustainability and economic competitiveness.

In this context, EU-funded research projects play an essential role by promoting innovations in the extraction, processing, and recycling of mineral raw materials. These projects, in addition to advancing scientific and technical knowledge, contribute to the transition towards a circular and low-carbon economy.

The aim of the event is to create a space for exchange where project progress can be shared, common challenges identified, and collaboration and the creation of new partnerships fostered. The occasion of the Raw Materials Week, that gathers all stakeholders on the topic, is perfect to give the opportunity of having a fruitful event. Our workshop is in fact officially considered a Side Event of the Raw Materials Week.

This workshop represents a unique opportunity to contribute to the development of policies that ensure the supply of strategic resources and position Europe as a leader in sustainability and technology.

What?

We have a preliminary programme that you can find in full (here).

The agenda includes an introductory speech from the EU funding agency, HaDEA, by M. Cacanoski (EU Project Officer – Raw Materials), followed by 15′ presentations of eight different EU projects that are all realated to efficient use of Raw Materials, and will explain about their contribution to the solution of the issues addressed by the Critical Raw Materials Act.
After the presentations, a panel discussion among the presenters, open to interaction with the audience, will be moderated by Thomas Unterweissacher of GEO Unterweissacher GmbH, a START partner, who will be the moderator throughout the event.

As a closing opportunity, there will be more time at the end for networking among participants.

This is a summary agenda:

14:00 – 15:15 First block: Opening presentation (M. Cacanoski, EU Project Officer – Raw Materials, HaDEA), START, GSEU, FutuRaM, CRM Geothermal
15:15 – 15:30 Coffee Break
15:30 – 16:30 Second block: CIRAN, SUPREEMO, REESOURCE, REPTiS
16:30 – 17:10 Roundtable and conclusions – moderated by T. Unterweissacher
17:10 – 17:30 Final networking session

Where?

The venue for the workshop, that will be run in person, is the Marivaux Hotel in downtown Brussels. If you are taking part in the Raw Materials Week, you will find the venue for this Side Event particularly convenient as it is located just 1 minute walk southwest of the La Plaza Hotel, where all plenary sessions of the Raw Materials Week are going to be hosted. The Marivaux is also 15 minutes walk from Bruxelles Nord/Brussels-Noord station and 15 minutes or less by public transportation from Bruxelles Midi/Brussels Zujd station (the hotel is located between the “Rogier” and “De Brouckère” metro stations). The Marivaux is situated within walking distance of the Grand Place and only 200 m from the new pedestrian area.

The Auditorium Alfred Hitchcock, that will host the event, is a former cinema hall, which became a seminar and congress room. An amazing place for meetings with a giant screen (and beamer, flipchart, sound system, free WIFI), comfortable seats and perfect acoustics.

How?

The event is free of charge, but we require a previous registration; we only have limited places and the deadline for registration was two weeks before the event for organisational reasons. After the deadline, we cannot guarantee a place for you. Depending on the remaining availability of places, we might offer also on-site registration, but this is not guaranteed.

Conversely, if you register but later change your plans, you are kindly requested to let us know before the event so that we may leave your place to other participants.

Come to our workshop and help build a resilient EU supply system for Critical Raw Materials!
